History of Reiki
Reiki (pronounced RAY-KEY) means "Universal Life Energy or Force" and is known to be over 2,500 years old. Reiki was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, born 1865 in Kyoto, Japan. He notice that many people around him were ill, some physically, some mentally and not able to function as well as they should.
During the late 1800's, Dr. Usui began a decade of research in China, India and Japan. He studied many ancient Sanskrit writings about Reiki and began using and teaching what he had learned. He found that there was a way of healing from ancient times, but it has long been forgotten. He spent much time trying to find the ancient method of healing, even learning these foreign languages so that he could read some of the old books in their original form. He found the valuable information and decided to follow the original practices as stated in the ancient writings.
Upon his return to Japan, Dr. Usui used this powerful knowledge to establish a healing society with three degrees and taught Reiki for the remainder of his life. On his passing, he gave the responsibility of teaching to Dr. Hayashi, who taught his wife and Hawayo Takata. During the 1940's, Mrs. Takata brought the teachings of Reiki to westerners and since that time, has spread all over the world.
Meaning of Reiki
Reiki (ray-key) promotes healing and wellness for the body, mind and spirit. This is accomplished by the gentle laying on or hovering of hands over the body from the practitioner to the client. An unseen life force energy is channeled through the practitioner to the client to promote healing. Use of Reiki energy is a unique, non-invasive, highly effective natural healing technique that supports the re-alignment of a person's energy systems in order to allow the body, mind and spirit to heal itself. We are alive with life force energy flowing within us. When the energy is disrupted, it causes our energy to become depleted. Reiki recharges that energy and stimulates the body and mind to heal the problem or ailment.
You do not need to believe in or accept Reiki to reap its benefit. It is completely natural and safe. Reiki is a non-invasive and has no side effects. Reiki is not a religion, but is spiritual in content. There is nothing to believe and is open to anyone. Reiki does not conflict with any religion or medical treatment. It compliments any and all traditional non-traditional methods of healing. Many nurses and massage therapists have began to use Reiki and realize that it further enhances and compliments many other forms of healing treatments.
The Reiki system of natural healing is difficult to explain to others and impossible to get to know through words. It must be experienced to be understood. When lecturing about Reiki, Hawayo Takata, one of the Grand Masters in the Usui lineage, used to finish her efforts to intellectually explain Reiki by saying, "Just do Reiki. Just do Reiki. Just do Reiki." She knew that the experience of channeling the universal life energy would lead people ultimately to an embodied understanding of the power of this ancient healing practice.
The beauty of Reiki is that it is so simple, and yet, so incredibly profound and powerful. Reiki is a gift that comes directly from the highest spiritual source and, as such, should be treated with reference and with our greatest respect.
The active use of Reiki promotes healing and balancing of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. Acting as simple as a first aid kit, Reiki works safely and effectively on the complexities of acute and chronic diseases, as well as, anxiety, fatigue, depression, frustration and other symptoms that are produced by stress, or by imbalance in our energy systems.
True healing and/or preventative medicine must address the cause of the imbalance within the energy systems of the person or living thing. Universal Life Energy addresses these subtler aspects of cause, releasing the deeply held thought forms in the body which create the symptoms of blockages in our physical form. Also, in the physical body every molecule and cell is affected in a cleansing, balancing, healing manner by consistent use of Reiki. Reiki is a powerful, compact effective system for becoming permanently and experientially connected with the Universal Life Energy.
